US election result date: Donald Trump or Kamala Harris? When will we know the winner?

News

The race to the White House has entered its final lap with the November 5 US Presidential elections just days away. Democratic nominee Kamala Harris and former US president Donald Trump are locked in a fierce and tough fight for the top post. Over 41 million Americans have already cast their ballots ahead of Election Day on November 5, setting the stage for one of the most intense elections in recent history.

This year's race for the White House will be one of the most unusual - and historically consequential - the US has seen. Joe Biden pulled out of the race after intense pressure from Democrats following his disastrous first debate with Donald Trump.

US election: When will the winner be announced?

The US election will be held on November 5, Tuesday. Americans vote on Tuesday, the one which comes after first Monday in November, as spelled out in US constitution. The one who wins the US presidential race will serve four years in the White House starting from their inauguration on January 20, 2025.

Counting of votes will begin on November 5 itself, but it could take days before it is known who will be the next US president. Generally, media houses announce the winner of the US presidential election either on the election night or the next day, based on the data they have.Big media outlets like the Associated Press do their own surveys to determine the winner of the election. These outlets "call" the winners in states after the polling window closes. If a candidate bags 270 or more votes based on the available results, then he or she will be called as the winner of the election. This, even as the official results may still be awaited.

When will we know the US election result?

The winner of the election will likely not be projected for days. In 2020, the result was called for Joe Biden four days after the November 3 ballot, after Pennsylvania’s result was confirmed. The state provided Biden with 20 electoral college votes, taking him over the 270 required to win. In 2016, Hillary Clinton conceded to Trump the morning after the election.
